About

In 1982, the North Texas Food Bank was established by Jo Curtis, Kathryn Hall, Lorraine Griffin Kircher, and Liz Minyard. They addressed the critical issue of hunger in our community by distributing donations of surplus food and grocery products — otherwise destined for landfills — through a network of charitable organizations. This network included 13 counties: Collin, Dallas, Delta, Denton, Ellis, Fannin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, Lamar, Navarro, and Rockwall. In the first year, the organization distributed 400,000 pounds of food.

Today, the NTFB continues the fight against hunger as a one of the top five food banks in the 200-member Feeding America Network. The NTFB now provides access to some 77 million nutritious meals annually, and has distributed more than 730 million pounds of food since its founding. However, the actual need in our community is closer to 92 million meals.  In response to those who remain under served, the NTFB has developed a 10-year plan to close the meal gap in North Texas by 2025, funded by a $55 million capital campaign – Stop Hunger Build Hope.

The Stop Hunger Build Hope campaign is the largest social service campaign in North Texas History, with more than $55 million raised to date. The funds are being used to bring NTFB closer to key stakeholders, donors, partners and volunteers. In 2018 the NTFB opened the doors to our Perot Family Campus in Plano, and invested in strategic Partner Agencies to increase our capacity to distribute 92 million nutritious meals by 2025. When complete, the NTFB will be positioned to meet the every need for nutritious meals in North Texas – all 92 million of them.

Perot Family Campus
The campaign kicked off with a lead gift of $12 million from the Perot Family, including Ross and Margot Perot, Ross and Sarah Perot, Nancy Perot and Sons, Suzanne and Patrick McGee, Carolyn and Karl Rathjen, and Katherine and Eric Reeves.

Set on more than 13 acres near the intersection of President George Bush Turnpike and Coit Road, the NTFB’s Northern Distribution Center is  named the Perot Family Campus in honor of the family’s multi-generational commitment to hunger relief.

The North Texas Food Bank established  its administrative headquarters at the Dallas Farmers Market, providing greater visibility within the community and an opportunity to strengthen relationships with donors and volunteers who live and work in central Dallas.

Thanks to a generous leadership commitment from The Moody Foundation, the Dallas Farmers Market Administration Building will be known as The Moody Center.

Network Expansion: Hub & Pantry Development

NTFB Feeding Network
In order to increase capacity to distribute 92 million nutritious meals annually, the NTFB must improve its distribution process to be as efficient as possible.  The Food Bank has worked with partners Sharing Life and Crossroads Community Services to establish hub locations as part of the NTFB Feeding Network. These hubs provide healthy foods to smaller agencies in their region- increasing capacity and access to healthy foods.

In addition to the hub concept, the Food Bank has provided key investments to agencies including:
  • Amazing Grace
  • City Square
  • Metrocrest Services
  • Christian Community Action
  • Seven Loaves Food Pantry
  • Jan Pruitt Pantry in Partnership with St Vincent De Paul and Catholic Charities Dallas

Three specially designed Mobile Pantry Trucks will allow the NTFB to provide access to SNAP enrollment, fresh produce and other nutritious food to high-need areas not served by a food pantry and located in hard-to-reach areas that cannot be accessed by a large truck, such as apartment complexes, housing unite and senior centers.

Client Visibility

Picture
The NTFB is developing a unique partnership with the Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation (PCCI) in order to work more effectively with other social service providers.  Using a technology called Pieces Iris™, health and social service providers will be able to seamlessly refer and track clients as they access care throughout our community in order to better coordinate services.  It will help the Food Bank understand how clients use the system, how their lives and health are changing over time and how the services offered are making a difference.
